It wasn't the captain's fault. All he wanted was to get to port on time, he was pressured to by his superiors back on land. He didn't think that the warnings were serious. Once the accident happened, however, things changed rather fast.
The people panicked, the lifeboats were overturned, the people fell into the water. In desperation, chairs and other pieces of furniture were thrown overboard to make flimsy floatation devices. People screamed in terror, flares were fired, rescue didn't arrive. Of all of the intentions that went on that ship, of all the dreams, of all the happiness, of all the moments, they were cast aside with the sinking of the ship, being pulled down into the blackened water becoming nothing more than memories.
